Me and Maya
Hi, I'm Jamie, the founder of The Mayalouise Project which is an experiment of my company Mayalouise.
I started selling art on Etsy under the name of Mayalouise in 2012. It was a calling from my artistic soul as I found myself stuck in unsatisfying jobs and looking to make some kind of a change. As I always loved embarking on creative projects I decided I needed to start something of my own that expressed my true nature. I didn't find a niche, I just started creating. And I called my Etsy company, Mayalouise. Here's why....
It all started with my cat Maya (middle name Louise). I saw her on a rescue site and drove from San Diego to Manhattan Beach to meet her and it was love at first sight. She was a small black cat- timid and calm. Healing from a fight while a stray, she had her jaw wired and her right eye had been removed. Patches of fur were missing on her legs and tummy. But she was BEAUTIFUL. She was PERFECT. She was healing and loving and I couldn't help but adore her.
Oddly enough, people make comments about Maya's appearance. I never think it's funny, I never appreciate the remarks, but it definitely makes me think. When I look at Maya, I just see a perfect little kitty. I usually forget that she's missing an eye. There isn't a thing I would change about her. And the more I reflected on her perfection just as she is, the more I learned about the real beauty and the idea that even when things don't look perfect, they may be perfectly falling into place.
I wanted to include Maya's name in the things I do so that I can carry that spirit into my work. I want to always remember that there is beauty in everything- perfection is boring. And most importantly we all deserve respect and compassion.
